Colloquium on Knowledge Transfer and Dissemination in Coal Phase Out for Just Energy Transitions
The Graduate program in Business Administration and the Graduate program in Administration - Management, Internationalization and Logistics at UNIVALI, University of the Vale do Itajaí, invites the academic and professional community to participate in the DE_CO2AL Dialogues, an international colloquium entitled Colloquium on Knowledge Transfer and Dissemination in Coal Phase Out for Just Energy Transitions, to be held from March 3 to 5, 2026, at UNIVALI, Itajaí campus. The global transition towards renewable energy and the urgency of addressing climate change have catalysed a significant decline in coal production and consumption. Nevertheless, despite sustained efforts in international climate diplomacy, decarbonisation in line with the Paris Agreement remains a major challenge. This issue is particularly critical for coal dependent regions in the Global South, where socio economic and environmental systems are deeply interconnected and where international pressures for decarbonisation are intensifying. Grounded in a multi process interaction perspective, the colloquium will examine how co evolutionary dynamics of technological decline and innovation diffusion shape socio technical transitions in carbon dependent contexts, with particular emphasis on the Global South. In dialogue with decolonial approaches to just energy transitions, the event will critically reflect on justice, power asymmetries, and the territorial and social implications of accelerated decarbonisation. By examining tensions and synergies across these interacting processes, the colloquium aims to generate insights for policy and governance strategies that promote the phase out of carbon intensive technologies, support the diffusion of innovations, and strengthen the engagement of local actors in accelerating energy transitions towards net zero. A central question guiding the discussions is: How do multi process interactions influence the socio technical decline of coal dependent regimes and enable the diffusion of sustainable practices in emerging economies? The colloquium is expected to contribute to the development of more equitable and sustainable transition policies in the Global South, supporting pathways towards a fairer and more resilient energy future.
